+1 Start over.

+2 Did you do know research on the average stats of accepted students before compiling this list?

I would scrap that list and focus on a solid tier down - look at U of South Carolina, U of Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, if you don't like the South find those equivalents up north.
I advise looking at the scattergrams on Naviance or whatever your school has, which will show his GPA in relation to his peers. I think this will be very enlightening - and whatever you see, it will be harder for an engineering student.

Alabama and Miss are likelies, but SC is much harder this year, my kid with over a 4.0 and 10 ap is deferred. Same with Tenessee, many many rejections and deferrals this year.

JMU is also much harder if you don't have a 4.0, and I would think for engineering GMU might be too.

I would really really have him work on the GPA. That is the best thing he can do. But the schools now on his list are difficult for the over 4.0 crew.

University of Texas at Austin basically took about 2 kids OOS this year. I know so many local kids with SATs in the high 1500s and GPAs 4.5+ who were denied this year---and for humanities majors. It was crazy.

Sorry OP. It's rough. You need to go down a step.

Math 750. Yes, avoiding the south. I don't have a login to Naviance or a code.

Ohio State is the only one that I think is a good shot.

He needs way more safeties, and I would only keep a few of these as reaches.

I didn't include the safeties on the list, but we have GMU and JMU, and I'm pretty sure he could get into at least one of those.

You really need to do some more research. For computer science, GMU has a minimum 3.5 GPA requirement. It’s at best a target not a safety.

U Washington and Wisconsin might be reasonable reaches.

Not Washington, but maybe Wisconsin . . . .

Wisconsin has very highly ranked CS and Engineering programs, they aren't reasonable with these stats.

Please suggest something. Most of those don't look like top tier schools to me.

They are, especially for CS.

Large public in VA. His sport might help him with a couple schools on the list.

Not likely.

What do you think it needs to be to make him a better candidate?

More motivation, so he has a chance for higher grades and higher test scores. Maybe a different major? He's competing with strong, motivated students for potentially the most competitive major.

His GPA and test scores need to be higher to have a chance at any of the schools you listed. Way higher.

Georgia Tech has a 6% admission rate for OOS. My son's friend at a top private, with a 4.0 UW and 1580 SAT, was just deferred.

U Washington and Wisconsin might be reasonable reaches.
