I've had similar experiences.

When some people put you into their mental box of "liberal," they basically turn you into a cartoonish boogieman who must be ritually renounced like Emanuel Goldstein from 1984.

And I am neither a liberal nor a Democrat. I just dislike Trump. But, that puts me in the "S--tLib Bucket" for most MAGA types.

I am a former independent turned Democrat over the last 8 years or so. I have drifted apart from MAGA Republican friends. I think I would have likely drifted from them regardless of politics as our lives are completely different, but it is all intertwined.

I have MAGA "friends" asking me how I'm doing and if I'm still employed, because they know I work at a federally funded nonprofit. I am too angry to respond politely so I haven't responded at all yet. Not sure how to move forward.

I have acquaintances and extended family who are MAGA. I wouldn't consider them friends, and I have always kept them at a distance because they were jerks before MAGA. They have always been unpleasant, insecure, rude, and overly anxious.

I don't have any otherwise reasonable friends and/or acquaintances who all of a sudden flipped a switch and became MAGA. For the MAGA people I know the madness has always been there.

Go watch the videos from last year comparing what happens when someone wears a Kamala hat to a Trump rally vs. when somebody wears a Trump hat to a Kamala rally. In general, there was a lot more politeness at the Trump rallies and a lot more abuse at the Kamala rallies.
