OP, I’ve tried it a couple times and liked it. But it makes me want to eat a horse after.

That's not a bad thing. It's likely your body telling you it needs protein to build muscle.

For me, intensive elliptical is the easiest way to get my heart rate up. Walking at 4 MPH is around 130-139, as is swimming a mile at around 36 minutes/mile. Elliptical with arms gets me to 140-170. Running could do that too but I despise it.

To the 60 year old: If you have never been an exerciser, almost anything you do will give you a nice benefit. You should probably be careful when starting. THe person who recommended a gym and trainer had a good idea. THe most important thing is to find things you enjoy. There are so many different options! Best wishes from another 60 year old

I have never exercised in my entire life. I am hoping to start Yoga now to get in condition.

OP - Is this you? Consider joining a gym. Lifetime Potomac has a strong ARORA program targeted at your age group. It sounds like a mixture of classes is what you're seeking.

It's me (I'm OP). Thank you all to your thoughtful suggestions.

Sorry - I am OP, but not the 60 year old.

Incline on treadmill. Once a week intense boxing class.
