I'm Portuguese (from the mainland) so I'm biased...but I'll throw out another option....the Azores!

Went there for a wedding and came back wishing I had family there so I could justify visiting more often.

They have really good restaurants (better than Portugal). Also, Portugal is very far and it's hard to get over the jet lag. I love Old Town San Juan and the beaches.

I mean, it helps that I've been to both places, but if I hadn't I'd go to whichever one I hadn't seen. New is big for me.

I don't believe for a second that the overall quality of restaurants in PR is better than Portugal. And the jet lag argument, meh. It sounds like you don't really like to travel far.

Well, have you been to both places? I have. Portugal is not known for its restaurants.

I haven't been to PR (but I'm a New Yorker whose best friends were Puerto Rican, so familiar with the cuisine), but I have been to Portugal, and it's absolutely false to say that their cuisine is inferior to anyone else's. Hell, I can eat bacalhau and Pastel de nata every single day, and that's just two dishes they're known for.

Saying that Puerto Rico has better restaurants than Portugal shows your ignorance.

Or perhaps yours. How much time have you spent in Puerto Rico outside of all-inclusives or similar (which are known for mediocre food world wide.)

I was born in Puerto Rico, lived there until I was through culinary school and moved straight to Portugal where I am now an internally-renowned food critic.

Well, given your internal regard, I guess you can safely ignore my opinion and move on with your day.

Indulge me. Why? More culture, better scenery, nicer people?

Compared with Portugal, Puerto Rico is like a village.

Wouldn’t even consider Puerto Rico. And I say this after going for a week last year.

Alot - I can guarantee more than you. And have never stayed in an all-inclusive. Ever. Anywhere. Sounds like you just want to take the easy way out - going to someplace familiar, less hassle instead of experiencing new or different things.

Both are great. I’d go with Portugal just cause you mention that it’s a milestone birthday, so makes sense to make it “special”. Puerto Rico is also special, but is much easier to get to and you could hop on a direct flight even for a long weekend.

Ultimately, it depends on how you feel. Sometimes I feel like just going somewhere “easy” and having a relaxing time. Sometimes I’m up for more sightseeing and active vacation. How does your friend feel about the choices? Ultimately, it’s a conversation to have with your friend.

Portugal by a mile. You also do not need to do a tour group to do Portugal.
