I’m now trying to think of any sweeping historical romance films that are good and I’m not thinking of any. I’m sure there must be some, I’m just drawing a blank.

I hate them both but out of Africa at least has Robert Redford and the scenery is pretty.

The book is better, but how can you say out of Africa is terrible? It gets me every time.

The ultimate is Out of Africa.

I also liked the book and the movie Oscar and Lucinda.

Far and Away is a good cheesy one.

The Remains of the Day is a bawl fest.

Anne of Green Gables miniseries from 1985, the first 4 hours of the series, gets me every time.

I agree with Elaine Benes. I remember hating this movie when it came out, because for one thing it glorifies and romanticizes cheating, which I generally hate. Also it’s a bit of a convoluted story.

A romantic, similar period drama movie I like but doesn’t get enough love is The Painted Veil with Ed Norton and Naomi Watts.

OP, I know it's an old movie, but if you've never seen it, An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is fabulous!!

The bath tub was super sexy, but other than that, so much bad stuff happens.

In the book it's not a romance (the relationship is clearly toxic) and the ending is entirely different. I can't believe they cut the gut punch ending from the book.
