If money is really a factor, then I'd look long and hard at Roanoke and seeing if you can make it work. Successful people have come out of Roanoke. But W&L really is that much higher ranked and opens that many more doors so it can't be discounted either.
Also consider what your child wants to do in college. If he or she is interested in going into business or law or consulting afterwards, W&L hands down due to alum networking and ease of getting better internships leading to analyst roles. The name on resumes opens more doors. If child is more interested in going to med school or a master's in whatever, maybe save the money and go to Roanoke and be at the top of the class.
Roanoke is nationally ranked just like W&L and we heard they have a similar vibe. Are the students similar socially? Is there really evidence that W&L grads get better jobs?
Please. Roanoke is "nationally ranked," like every college in the country is "nationally ranked." Yes, it is somewhere in the rankings. Nowhere near W&L.
You must not understand how rankings work. Some colleges are ranked regionally, Roanoke isn’t because Roanoke is in the national rankings. USNWR says Roanoke is a national LAC.

Schools are not peers. If you like Roanoke perhaps look at Washington College in MD.
Why does any of this matter for a high stat kid that would be successful at either college?
I hate to summon the bucknell boosters, but W&L actually places on the Street. Roanoke doesn’t. The best Roanoke College grad is probably going to Advance Auto corporate to do FP&A.
Do you have a cite?
Niche has Roanoke grads at 44k six years out, W&L at 76k. If you think the OCR opportunities at both colleges are equal, you're deluded.
(And I HATE W&L so I'm not saying this as a booster.)
Roanoke is a good safety school for someone considering W&L however. Reasonably similar vibes given the academic and outcome gulf between them.

Adjusted for undergraduate size, W&L is usually top 20 for placements. See https://www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-banking/ (16th for class of 2024).
Roanoke College not listed (nor Bucknell for that matter). But given Advance Auto is headquartered in Roanoke, they are always looking for bright business students for FP&A.
