I had a friend who did the whole "parents permission" thing as an attempt to appease her very traditional Dad. Her parents said yes, he proposed, she said yes, but then the Dad later said he was revoking his permission for unclear reasons. My friend's fiance went along with it.

Honestly my friend should have seen it for the red flag it was. Would have saved him years of heartache. His second wife is much nicer, though.

I wouldn’t expect to be asked for blessing or permission by my DD's future spouse (if she gets married.) But I would live for the both of them to come and tell me after the proposal.

Ugh, the whole thing gives me the heebie jeebies. If parents say no, or that they should wait, or express disapproval, are you going to change your mind?

If everyone is already on board and knows an engagement is coming and is happy about it, then there is no need, and it is an awkward conversation for no reason.

But to each and all their own. If it is important to the woman that her parents opinions be a part of it, then go for it.

I asked my FIL’s blessing back in 2000. I would never have done it in my country (UK), where this would feel horribly old-fashioned and sexist, but Americans tend to be more conservative and it went down very well here.
