Agree, I’m the OP and nothing about my kid’s profile said research. Humanities major, no research experience or demonstrated interest.

Meanwhile my Bio admit whose recommender talked about his research aptitude got Honors College but no FIRE invite. FIRE does sound pretty great, OP, congrats!

All the LLPs (Honors, Scholars, FIRE etc) have some sort of research aspect. With honors you have choices of programs and rank.

Maybe, outside of Baneker/Key, but my guess is merit goes mostly to the Honors College admits. Many have Ivy level stats and UMD is trying to attract them in the fact of other strong offers.
