However, it's not something he'd consider normally bc of typical federal government stability.I want him to wait out this madness for a bit and see if things calm down. Federal retirement benefits are not something to throw away. But he's been miserable for a while and all of this junk since Trump took office is just reinforcing his misery.

What would you do in this situation?

I would GTFO.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here and there are a lot of unknowns. So I would just tell him you are unsure of what the right thing to do is and that it is up to him.

The other question I have tho is how old is he? If he is close to being 57 and could retire with government health insurance and then go private sector, that weighs in the favor of sticking it out in government.

the other issue is how well you guys could manage without his government pay if he gets fired and can't find another private sector job

Just the fact that he's already been miserable for a while (pre Trump) seems more than enough to consider switching jobs. Why is he miserable?

BUT, I’m in an agency/ component exempt from FORK YOU and which is not eligible for VERA this round. And I’m not doing policy work that could cause problems during this Admin. So, I’m not worried about a RIF (but if I got one, it would be 52 weeks, which beats the FORK YOU offer).

What does this mean?

What factors would have to happen in order for you to take a new position that was currently being offered to you, knowing that in 'regular' life, the government position is better for stability, retirement, and salary. The new position is a telework position, however, which is a huge plus right now.

I’m 50 with 18 years in. Too close to retirement MRA and eligible in 2 years for a VERA if I can hang on. So no. Golden handcuffs at this point. I’ll also to carry our health insurance until retirement.

The main factor I would weigh is the job stability of the company he is considering. If it seems solid, I’d go. Yes, less money is isn’t ideal, but what are the next few govt salary increases going to look like? I’m guessing NOT GOOD.

I wouldn't be so fast going to the private sector yet. There could easily be mass layoffs very soon due to economy especially if Treasury stops issuing all federal grant/debt/salary payments.

The concern ai have is, is the consultant job working with his old agency. Because if so, would that jib go away if there's enough chaos at the agency.

I did, several years ago, I got an offer with a pay raise but lower benefits and less job security, and I took the money. Co-workers were shocked that I'd leave, I had older Feds stop me in the hall to tell me I was making a bad choice. But I'm much happier now, the money is nice and there is less micro-management coming down. It's the Feds who joined the government out of college who can't imagine ever leaving.

He’s been miserable at the job for awhile. It’s only a small pay cut. His job might be on the chopping block. And he has a new job in hand that he’s interested in. To me it’s a no brainer. Take the new job. Life is too short to have a job that you hate when you have other options. Why would you not want your husband to be happy?
