We've had two friends unexpectedly die of cancer within a few months of diagnosis. They were in their early sixties and never got a chance to retire so we decided to retire early and get to the bucket list. Life is shorter than you think.

I retired in 2019, and moved to be near my grandson in a HCOL area. Luckily, I sold my home at triple what I paid for it. Otherwise, I could not have afforded to live near my grandson.

My federal annuity and SS provide more than enough to live on while my TSP continues to grow. I raised my child to be educated and self-sufficient, which she is, so I don't need to support her.

The only thing I would do differently would be to stay in shape, so I could travel. I'm working on that now.

I am the person you describe. It's great! Keep working until you have enough for retirement AND you feel done with your job. One day I just knew I was done. I could have stayed longer and thought I would but the freedom to be away from it all sounded better so why stay? It was time for something new. The annoying parts of the job overshadowed what I liked about it. I am healthy and have energy and wanted to just enjoy free time. I had loved my career. I planned my exit for a year and left. No regrets.
