It’s literally a drug. Nobody has a taste for the crap. You’re getting high and euphoric feelings from the caffeine and in anticipation of the caffeine buzz. People don’t even realize they’re no better than Pavlov’s dogs. lol

Coke is a completely different drink, Diet Coke is New Coke. I like Diet Coke and don't like Coke Zero or regular Coke. I get real sugar one sometimes for cooking short ribs.

Oh, OK. I must not like regular Coke then, because you don’t like it. (?)

huh. You compared Diet Coke to Coke, it's like comparing Coke to Pepsi. Different not just because of the sweetener. I prefer Pepsi to Coke, but Diet Coke to Pepsi. All just a matter of personal taste preference. I would take pretty much any beer over Diet Coke, so?

Let me try to go slower so you can keep up.

I did not “compare Diet Coke to Coke.” I said I would rather have a real Coke, meaning better to go for the calories and have a rare treat than have a Diet every day like many people do. I don’t know why you responded to *my opinion* rather than just writing whatever you want. Weird.

I will go slower too. I would rather have any beer than a Coke. It's not about calories. Coke Zero which is the diet version of Coke is less popular than Diet Coke which is the diet version of now non-existent New Coke. I responded to your opinion because it compares two different beverages, not a diet and a regular version of the same product.

Comments like this make me angry. Because who the heck are you?

As it is, I don't get the impression the "lowest common denominator" drinks a lot of diet coke. Sure, the dietary habits of working class people isn't always healthy but based on what I see in the cheap supermarkets and working class areas, it's not the diet coke that is the popular sugary drink. Take a long hard look at your local convenience market's refrigerators and diet coke is typically buried in on one specific shelf while there's vast shelves of other drinks.

I (upper middle class, two Ivy degrees) drink diet coke because it's my equivalent of a happy hour cocktail. I don't drink much alcohol. I have two diet cokes after work, with lots of ice and a slice of lemon. I also swim regularly, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet. And so what?

Because they never tried Coke Zero? Especially Coke Zero from other countries that tastes better than the one in the U.S.

Chemicals and salt are “delicious”?

I'm addicted to it. I have tried so many times to stop, and can't.

But I don't smoke or drink, and have decided to now just embrace my one vice. It makes me so happy.

I know it is gross and not healthy, and I am kind of ashamed of my addiction. At work, I pour Diet Coke into my giant coffee mug to take into meetings so that people don't know I'm drinking soda.

You develop a taste for it, just coffee. I hate coffee.
