I think you're confusing this with Principal placement.
Also, the approach to and timing of advanced math placement for non LIV kids varies by school.

Not true. My daughter was in advanced math beginning in 3rd. She did take an entrance test that year. The next year (4th) she was also placed in the advanced math class. She did take an entrance test as well. However, she was automatically placed in advanced math for both 5th and 6th grade. No tests were taken.

My understanding is that you can refer for part-time services (level iii) at any time. So no harm in either referring him or speaking directly to his teacher about his math placement. Start of the new semester would be perfect time to switch.

OP again, I should have specified that after my child didn't get into AAP last year, we requested Level III services and my child, who consistently has received 95+ percentile in math iReady and always 4s in math, was only placed in Level II which means an extra worksheet or two (and then we get complaints from the teacher about homework getting turned in too early, even though the answers are correct and all directions were followed). There are no behavioral issues, we've never received any complaints or feedback, so I don't get it. I will for sure reach out to the teacher about it before the Level III papers are due this year.
