I don’t have much experience with children but my initial thinking was 8-9 years old for 2 week sleepaway, maybe 7th grade for 2 month summer boarding in another country. I would really like to hear other opinions and reasons!

Just out of curiosity, where are you looking for the foreign cultural programs?

DD loved sleep away camp the summer after 4th grade.

But she also did a boarding school type camp at that age and disliked it very much.

She preferred the traditional camp in the woods with a cabin and bunkmates with a camp counselor.

She disliked staying a dorm on a private school and kids were on their iPads and going to eat in the cafeteria.

DS did 5 day sleepaway camp at 7, then 2 weeks at 8 and 9. We are thinking about language immersion sleepaway this summer for at least 3 weeks and he is fully on board.

My nephew on the other hand who is similar in age, no way. Haven’t done sleepaway yet at 10.

It’s child dependent.

I grew up going to a month-long sleep away summer camp. I started at 12 and that felt way too old. My kids will start the summer after 5th grade. I remember the younger kids at camp (4th grade or younger) often having a really hard time, missing parents, lots of crying and special phone calls, etc.

This is so kid dependent. We considered sending my daughter at age 9, but she wasn’t enthusiastic at that point. This year, at 11, I think she’s ready for sleep away camp.

It’s child and camp dependent. My DD started at 8 for 3 weeks. By 10 she was asking for 7 week full summer session. This year will be her last summer as a camper and she has mentioned continuing to go back as a counselor.

My son wasn’t ready at 8, and after spending some time at the camps as an employee, generally the boys don’t do very well until 9-10.

I would not send them to a different country though. Too many variables and risks, plus I wouldn’t really call it “cultural immersion.” They are just going to be with a bunch of other wealthy kids from other countries

Sleep away summer camp the girls start at 8. Ours started at 10 and the cliques had already been formed and it took a while for her to become comfortable. The kids who go to the same camp, year after year and eventually CIT and counselor there start at 8

My older daughter is going to her 4th summer at sleepaway camp. She started at 9 for 4 weeks. She is a very enthusiastic camper. My second is much less flexible, but she has been a big fan of camp too. She is going back for her second summer. It seems like a great growth experience. 9-10 years old is a great age.

Not boarding school exchange, but I have been thinking about swapping kids with a relative abroad for a month or two so kid can learn heritage language and culture and the other kid can see the sights and see DC and NY. I would feel more comfortable at younger ages than normal sleep away camp since it is family. I would take care of cousin’s kid and she would take care of mine. I think it is still a *little* too early and mine is almost 8 yo.
