I just read The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate with my 12 year old. If you’re open to YA, it was SO delightful and heartwarming.

Although it doesn't seem like it at first glance, but I think the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (first book is All Systems Red) would fall into this category. It's about a security drone that hacks it's regulator so it can do whatever it wants, but what they want is really just to watch videos and avoid people. I really liked the GraphicAudio version of the audiobooks. Most of the series are novellas, so they are nice and short.
