I’ve been to the Maldives - it is beautiful and amazing. It is far. I’d go again; and I’d again visit somewhere else en route. I wouldn’t do just the Maldives for a trip. Like other posters suggested- partner it with somewhere else or pick a gorgeous beach destination closer.

OP, I loved Maldives, and would go back for sure, but for your situation, I think you're making the right call with Turks and Caicos with the kids. I'm from India, and it's a short hop from home, and that's what makes it feasible for me. I would pick some place that would be less appealing to kids but still has a lot to offer for my solo trip, but if you just want to chill, and don't really care to explore, then Key West should be fine.

OP here thanks again guys. We definitely settled on Turks and caicos with the kids for August. For my solo trip, I'm inclined to just stay here in the USA and visit key West when it's least busy.

Watch out for coral bleaching reports if snorkeling is important for coral not just fish. Maldives bleached I thought.

You don't have to go to the Maldives for that. Try Thailand for gorgeous beaches AND something to see and eat.

I would think that if your primary goal to see the Maldives are beautiful beaches, then you could easily find that in the Caribbean, much much cheaper, and probably with more things to do around. Maldives are quite boring outside the beach, and the culture will be strange to you.

Maldives is a great destination for boring people.
