IMO, the discount at the Real Real and other consignment sellers isn’t enough to risk the item being fake or getting an item that’s even the slightest bit worn. For 20% more, I prefer to go to the store and buy the item new. If the discount was 40% or more, then I’d reconsider.

If you can buy it, still pay your bills and are on track with savings, you can afford it. You already know that.

When I feel guilty about splurging for something, I wait a month or so. If I’m still thinking about it, then I really want the item and feel it’s justified. If I move on, then it’s not something I really wanted and would have been an impulse buy.

I can think of two items I didn’t buy that years later I still regret- a deep purple Burberry jacket in a style and color I haven’t seen since and a Gucci belt with a bumble bee buckle that was only sold in the Gucci Museum store in Florence. It’s silly bc buying both of these items wouldn’t have impacted my financial well being at all and instead I waste head space wishing I had treated myself.

OP here, a new Chanel would be twice as much. Twice the anxiety! Or a used one from the Real Real might be fake - also twice the anxiety! I’m too anxious for anything but a basic shop experience.

I disagree. Why can’t those moms wear whatever bags they choose? Who are we to judge if a particular bag is or isn’t a fit. There are women who would never buy anything nice for themselves because they feel they don’t go to fancy events for those nice things. That is such a sad sentiment. No one should be judging styling choices. If they are happy carrying these items or even if they are signaling their wealth or status, just let them. Why should you be so triggered?

Your primate brain knows that your lizard brain desire for the bag is wrong, and you won't be happier having bought it. Maybe you're subconsciously embarrassed about the image it puts out of you as a superficial status-chaser. It's moments like these when you decide who you really are. It's a little bit of self-discovery and a little bit exercise of free will, as the angels and devils of your nature struggle for control.

I'm pretty frugal. Also in a financially comfortable position. I had my eyes on a designer bag for a long time. Took my time to be certain it's what I really really wanted, and no alternative would do. After that I pulled the trigger.

I do have regrets with some of my luxury purchases, including a Gucci bag that I almost never wear. But in those incidents I knew why I bought, not because I truly loved the item, but because I was persuaded/influenced. I can and will sell those bags. But my dream bag? Still love it all these years later.

Maybe first treat your anxiety?
