Takoma park is a beautiful place to live but has shit schools. We all know this.

The best middle school and the best High school in the state serve Takoma Park. We all know this.

Which schools? I have only met people who have left Takoma park for the W's.

TPMS and Blair.
No one has left Takoma Park for the W schools, no one.

Because some people “don’t see race” and therefore, they are blind to policies and practices that single out Black and Brown boys for punishment while white and Asian boys engage in the same or worse behavior. And even though they allegedly “don’t see race”, they somehow consistently fail to offer highly capable and interested Black boys opportunities to take engaging courses or participate in “nerdy” extracurriculars.

As an MCPS teacher, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to intervene on behalf of a Black boy whom my “race blind” colleagues are either unfairly harassing or unfairly failing to encourage.

MCPS is one of the most liberal counties in the country and race isn't an issue

I would send him to the best school you can afford, and by that I mean by affording to live in the catchment area for such school(s).

Walt Whitman. One of the most inspiring teachers there for my son is an AA English teacher who has positively swapped out the books on the syllabus for 10th grade honors English. He decided not to teach Of Mice and Men due to the inherent racism and instead taught Flowers for Algenon. My son said he was probably the best teacher he had encountered during his time at MoCo schools.

Pyle is the feeder MS. I think MS is tricky for everyone and this school is no exception.

I don't know if private is an option for you, but St. Barts has a history of providing a solid education and attracts AA families.

Montgomery County is very large and very diverse. There are opportunities for kids of all types to be successful in all schools.

Start your search with your job and commute, not schools. Depending on where that is then this board can provide better advice.

WJ is diverse and has a lot of niche academic clubs and electives for nerdy and shy kids. It is huge and has one lunch period which is great for sampling clubs and meeting people with common interests.

Problem is there is a massive boundary study about to happen so you won’t really know where you will be zoned for high school.

That and at least one of the feeder middle schools, Tilden, is not good for a lot of kids.

Saint Anselm’s Abbey in DC is a Catholic private boys school full of smart, hard working-maybe a bit quirky kids. We are zoned for Walter Johnson and it seems very diverse, good academics, and large so you can find your crew.

As a black parent who moved to the area, I can say with certainty that the W cluster was not and is not where I would start looking.

This is a tough question as kids change a lot in MS/HS. Having had to move to the area in a similar fashion I would recommend looking into the areas where there is more balanced diversity of students and academics levels overall. This way you son has a greater likelihood of encountering more people of varied races that share his interest. Additionally, the schools will be more apt to pay attention to programming and policies. Also keep in mind where you want to live in relation to other things (job, transportation options, activities).

Start with looking determining some areas you think you liked to live and then look at school profiles in those areas. You can also look at the school websites, PTA pages(if they exist) and any social media related sites.

You can view the school profiles here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/school-profiles/
