agree with this. it really comes down to the actual school and relationships it has with colleges. i have kids at 2 rigorous privates and the admissions for any one university can be very different between the 2.

The school profile will tell you what you need to know. Same with naviance. If you post the name we can show you the data.

A 3.7 at a rigorous private is the equivalent to any grade inflated 4.0 + at a public school. Assuming you are applying to colleges that understand this, and depending on her SATs, she should be safe applying to any top 20-50.

She is not in the DMV. Niece will take SAT for first time this spring. I don't know her PSAT. She is full pay I think.


The test scores will likely matter. We can help when she has those. But if she has mainly 5s on AP exams, she’ll likely be a strong candidate at many SLACs test optional.

If you take a look at Harvard Westlake's unhooked college acceptance data, 3.7 / 4.5 UW gets you in many top schools, including ivies.

From our school, every college is in play with a 3.75 and that level of rigor. Doesn't mean you'll get in, but you have earned the right to buy the lottery ticket, assuming strong test scores.

But this is really high school dependent. She should ask her counselor when they meet.

Not necessarily. 3.8uw from a rigorous non-DMV private gets into schools like Vanderbilt, Cornell, WashU, Emory, Georgetown etc from our school.

yes, 3.8 maybe. 3.7 no. there is a list and it's right about there. these are not guarantees but 3.8 and above is where those schools start to be possible.

Pretty much anything outside of the top 10 liberal arts colleges and top 25 national universities.


Tend to agree...Barnard if ED, Colby, some other topish SLACs.

It will tell you WAY more at least initially, than these guesses.

Hire a savvy college counselor. The parents seem clueless- so it will be extra helpful. Just don’t like them to talk you into somewhere weak because of “fit.”
