Hope she's not heavy with a tragic tattoo like a hippo.

OP, it seems to me like an enormous portion of the population 30 years and younger has tattoos. It's not at all scandalous anymore. You're going to have to accept this and move on, and the longer you act put out, the worse this is going to harm your relationship with your daughter.

FWIW, my 14 yr old has been telling me for a few years now that she wants to get tattoos. I've told her that's fine, it's your body, but please don't get anything on your neck or your face. If she does that, I will be really upset, and I think rightfully so. A tattoo anywhere else can be covered up when necessary.

DP. She's not actually "going through a really hard time" though. Nothing happened to her. Her adult daughter paid for something she'd wanted for a really long time, that doesn't affect OP in any way whatsoever. Let's have some perspective, friend.

My 24yo son recently got one. It's an inconspicuous place but visible sometimes. I don't like it but he is a productive, kind, intelligent, family oriented man so in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter.

This is so small potatoes. Get over yourself, lady. Your child could be a drug dealer, a criminal, a real low life scum who tricks vulnerable people out of money. They could be dying of cancer or struggling with serious disabilities. It’s just one tattoo - not likely on their face. Get some perspective. Stop being so controlling. Let them be their own person. So it’s not something you’d choose. Big deal. She’s not hurting anyone.

At worst, OP is going through a hard time of her own making and is utterly undeserving of empathy. Either she's a troll or, even worse, she actually is feeling this way. If it's the second, hopefully being told the kind of worthless parent she is will help her get over it.

Thankfully both of my children respected our wish that they not go down the tattoo road while in college as many of their friends did, don't know if this will last into adulthood. Not much you can do if they make that choice.

My parents' one and only rule, NO tattoos. This was a non negotiable. One of my sisters got a "tramp" stamp while in college and she admittedly was absolutely stoned out of her mind when she got it. One day she was helping rinse off my parent's patio before a family barbecue bent over and Dad saw it, ugh he was beyond angry. Having lost family in the Holocaust who obviously had tattooed numbers on them was a sacred thing to him and my mother. They did nothing then, but she was cut out of the will when my dad died.
