Less widely known than some might think.

Those studies on red wine being beneficial were called into question years ago. At this point, people who like alcohol tune out the obvious.

Be clear, the cannabis industry has been behind much of the anti-alcohol campaign of the last few years. People destroying their brains much faster than moderate alcohol will kill them.

Thank goodness there’s no powerful alcohol lobby or anything

Even crazier is how the hard alcohol / whiskey lobby is pitted against the beer lobby. The whiskey lobby whines about how “big beer” gets preferential regulatory treatment. They’re all fighting over who will get to kill us!

They have changed the definition of moderate drinker from three drinks per day for men, and two for women to 1-2 drinks per week. This is to avoid the negative effects of alcohol. Though the newer studies are suggesting that any alcohol consumption is bad.

Still other studies show people drink based on their social groups.

This link has been known for decades and yet here we are with the Surgeon General only just now making a public health statement on the issue.

That's corporate control of American government in a nutshell, people.

At least the USA has the best rates for beating / overcoming cancer. And in the DMV you've probably got access to some of the best hospitals in the world. NIH and Johns Hopkins at the very least.

I think it’s great! It’s about time. This will make me and hopefully others think twice.

I’m glad they’re at least pushing the info a little more. Most people recognize that alcohol poses risks (like many things we do in daily life), but it helps when those risks are better quantified and explained. I used to think heavy drinking was mostly an issue for liver health, but the reality is that it’s a neurotoxin that adversely affects every system in your body. Obesity and sugar are also problems, but that’s not a reason to give alcohol a pass and say it’s mostly fine. I also think lots of people drink way more than what is clinically categorized as moderate, but have convinced themselves their drinking is “moderate” because it’s not interfering with their day to day life in the stereotypical ways (no DUIs, job loss, etc.). I don’t think this kind of announcement has a huge impact on people’s behavior, but every little nudge helps the long-term messaging that will hopefully be more ingrained in our kids.
