Love all you who keep it up til Jan 6 (the 12th day/Epiphany!). We would but we leave town to ski over NYE and take it down for safety. I water the first couple of weeks and then around Dec. 16 or 17 stop. Usually it has slowed drinking a lot by then and the water slowly evaporates so there is maybe 1/3 left in the stand. I can get it outside without spillage.

Oh good, that’s the expensive tree stand I just bought. I’ll hold off on the present pump.

Yes, this is the stand we have. We’ve had to fill it twice - once when we set up, and a week later after the tree really sucked up all the water. We haven’t had to fill it again and it’s been a couple of weeks now. The stand is also super easy to use and very stable.

Oh god now I want this giant thing I don’t have room to store. Hahaha. Maybe I’ll forget it exists before next Christmas.

I already switched to the wirecutter tree stand that weights a ton.

I fill up a 2 liter soda bottle and stick it in the stand. It will release the water as needed. Initially daily, then every other day, etc. You could do two bottles for decreased frequency.

We have a 9 year old that we use for that purpose, but I think we’ll retire them because I like the fitness test aspect of this. If I can’t get out from under the tree, take my keys and push me off into the ice floe.

We don’t put up our tree until the second week of December at the earliest because we keep it up until epiphany.

I know they’re all cut at the same time. If temperatures are cool enough and you have to buy right after Thanksgiving, keep it outside for a week or two.

DH waters every night when he shuts the house down because he stays up late to watch TV. We are also careful about not leaving the lights on for hours and hours until the week of Christmas- we still use incandescent lights and they get warm enough to dry the tree. We close the heat vent closest to the tree, too. We also have contractor bags and towels under the tree stand that we cover with the tree skirt. You never know what might go wrong with water and a giant dead tree.

In spite of all of this effort, some years we just get a dry tree and it drops piles of needles. This year has been great and we have a happy tree that isn’t dropping needles but also isn’t drinking much.
