I used ham on pumpernickel with mustard, store bought chicken salad added lettuce and served on white sandwich bread, provolone cheese and salami on pumpernickel and a cream cheese mixed with cranberry chutney on white bread. I had a tray of pickles, olives, carrots, an celery. I offered seltzer, water, tea, coffee, and juices for the kids. I put out a tray of cookies that included peanut butter kisses, sugar cookies, candied orange peel dipped in chocolate, and gingersnaps.

I made a lot in case they wanted to take some with them for the rest of the trip. This is a mom, dad, three ES kids and we a couple and two ES kids. There were a few pickles left.

Are you the 5 kinds of home baked bread lady? You and your husband have a boat??

Haha I remember that thread. 10/10

Some kibbled wheat, puffed barley, and some ancient grains.

Funny we are doing a similar stop today. We really do not want to stay long as we have several more hours to drive. I described the visit as a rest stop. I know our hostess (like OP) will want to feed us but I hope for just light snacks so we can head out after a short time. I specifically aimed for after lunch time.

Exactly. No need to bake four different types of bread for 8 different sandwiches and grow wheat in your yard to make crackers. Keep things simple and light - they're arriving right after lunch.

Eew! Cold burgers (because there's no way to time this right) wilted fries and nasty chemicals on melted ice. No thanks.

Charcuterie plus some fruit is perfect. Offer fizzy and flat water, coffee/tea if they need a boost.

Burgers and fries can be at the door fresh and piping hot almost as your guest arrives if they give you a brief heads up, and caffeinated soda ice cold in your own fridge.

But enjoy your cold lunchmeat . . . er . . . “charcuterie.”

I'd put out cheese & crackers, nuts and grapes and offer beverages. It's a pop in- so just easy light snacks.
