Sounds like the fbi has been keeping a close eye on him, which is exactly their job. We probably should not let deportation orders drag on so long. He may have felt like he had nothing left to lose.

Hardly. The bad actors are monitored, they indict themselves without prodding, which would be entrapment and lead to a declination to prosecute.
They usually end up being pathetic, vulnerable people with mental defects. Because they are so easily baited into terrorism they obviously need to be put away, but most of this stuff is lonely losers thinking they found love online and then getting enticed to make incriminating statements.
Except that low-IQ people can do and kill people, so even though it's sad that they get swept into terrorism online... they still have to be treated like the criminals they are.
I wish we treated our criminals differently, though. Conditions in most prisons in the world are barely humane, even in developed countries, and most criminals are low IQ and/or psychiatric cases (I include severe and untreated ADHD, depression, anxiety, and addicts in that list). The larger question is how to stop people who suffer from neurodivergence that comes with a higher risk of aggression?

Yes and all 3 were commuter students. Where and how were they radicalized in northern Virginia?
Fairfax county is a sanctuary city and they got lots of mosques all over Bailey's cross roads. If you walk around there it looks like a different country or El Salvadorian and Arabs
America is a melting pot. The country has always been a sanctuary.
I believe these students are natural born citizens. They are as American as you.
The student in the article is an Egyptian citizen currently in deportation proceedings.
P’shaw! He’s just here committing the terrorism Americans are too lazy to commit themselves!
