Several posters have said this already, but I'm another poster with a mother who, in fact, at 85 no long wants to make hotel reservations. She never learned how and then my dad died so here we are. Does this mean all people in their 80s are incapable of making a hotel reservation? No, of course not, but it is certainly true of some of them. If your parents are still fully managing paying their bills, making hotel reservations and planning vacations, well, consider yourself lucky.

Even in Europe smoking has been mostly banned in public spaces (that includes hotels) for quite a few years. You might find one that has an outdoor patio that allows smoking. Try Sleep Inn, Quality Inn, Motel 6.

Yes. They just pick up the phone and are immediately connected to a non-smoking hotel. 🙄

Why can’t they stay (and smoke in) your home, Op? If there aren’t enough beds, your family could stay in a hotel.

Why can’t they just smoke in their car or walk outside for a few minutes?

I don’t see any way to filter this when I’m on sites like Expedia or Hotels.com. Do I just need to pick up the phone and start calling various hotels to see if they have any smoking rooms?

Even a room with an attached small balcony would be sufficient but it’s difficult to filter for those as well. Hoping someone on here has hd a similar family experience and can share a go to spot.

If it's a non-smoking hotel, they will 99% NOT be ok with smoking on the balcony. Don't rely on this.

My parents smoke and have long accepted the fact that they need to go OUTSIDE to smoke.

I wouldn't help them out, OP. If they can't tolerate walking a few yards outside of their hotel entrance to light up, I wouldn't want them visiting. They might light up inside your house!

Yikes, a bit defensive. My parents DO lack this ability. I never said all elderly people but yes, in fact, many do lack this ability.
