I’m the op - the floor is a regular medium wood.
As I said in the op, dh wants something with bold color and I’m looking for a compromise. So white quartz backsplash doesn’t do it for him, even though I like it. Also as I mentioned, the house was built in the 90s - the quartz backsplash seems way more modern than the rest of the house.
I’d love any specific links to tile that might be a good compromise. We have been to 3 stores and I’m about to cave to what he wants because this is getting old. He only wants bold color. Not interested in adding interest with texture or an an interesting layout.

Most tile backsplashes look terrible because people simply do not have the design skills to select the right size and pattern of tile to blend seamlessly with the rest of the house which itself is likely very dated. Go with the simple solution and do a countersplash--same material for your countertop and backsplash. That is the very best way to achieve a cohesive look that you can style against with art, towels, and other kitchen accessories.

The countertop on the island is a white quartzite with gray veining. The sink is in the island as is the dishwasher. The countertops for the rest of the kitchen are black honed granite and the backsplash behind the cooktop is a blue subway tile with white grout in a herringbone pattern. The pattern gives visual interest but isn’t so busy.
I'd love to see a similar photo. This sounds busy AF like it was put together by a committee.
