It’s better to be realistic about it and keep options open than go all in on a sport he may see no playing time because he’s so young and it’s a competitive environment.

Yes he does! He’s playing multiple sports but the reality is in our competitive area, only 30 percent of kids made teams by age 11 and even for a no cut sport like football, only about a quarter of the kids contribute in games and play. So it’s good to keep options open if you don’t make the school teams so you actually have a sport you can play games in. Rec drops off entirely for many sports that have school teams.

Hockey and soccer both go by birth year rather than school year.

If your son has a May 2010 birthday, he would be the oldest in 14u.

PP- in the south, there are many kids with Jan birthdays who are redshirted, especially in private schools. So while May isn't a super young birthday up here, it could well be down in the south.

Thanks. What age did you start travel baseball? And it goes by one year groupings?

Starts at 8u. One year groupings until High School.

Thank you, that’s helpful as something that might be a good fit if his age becomes an issue. How do you typically find a travel team? He has played in the little league but didn’t play this year.

Look on Facebook. Usually there is a local board where tryouts are posted. Or you can ask around.

The travel teams loooove May-summer birthday kids. Doubly so if they are big for their age.

He could also play little league for another season or two (I think I read that he was only 8) and then transition to travel around age 10. Fairly common age to start

Thanks so that would be 4th grade summer start looking?

He’s 8. 5’6 and 6’3, 90 percentile for height and 85 for weight.

How old? What sport?
We are doing that too, see the OP I mentioned most of his sports are grade based so I want an option that he’s playing with peers of the same age.
