Depends on when you purchased your house. Ten years ago? 150k was probably enough to have a middle class lifestyle. Now, purchasing a middle class house built pre 1990, you would probably need 250k+

Median HHI is under $100K in Silver Spring, $150K in Leesburg and over $200K in Vienna. Almost no one in McLean is middle class. You choose to live near work or in a top school system. That doesn’t mean you’re poor when you’re stretched as a result of that. Middle class families have long commutes in this area and rent. No commute and homeownership are signs you’re UMC now.

My guess is $100 - $200K.

Really depends but I'd say the range is anywhere between $120K for single and childless in Sterling to $400 for two kids heading to college in Vienna (this family could not live in a new-build McMansion or afford two kids full pay at an ivy).

Also quality of life depends on age and life-stage. Two 45 yos are not equal if one has two teens and bought their first property in Arlington in 2006, and the other bought their first house in Arlington in 2023 and has a toddler.

That's because the area is huge. You cannot buy a house in a nice(ish) area with good schools on $250k anymore unless you have a huge downpayment.

Yep, housing prices have gone up so much that $250k is barely middle class here now. It's only middle class if you bought your house 10-15 years ago.
