Farrington/Clerkenwell would be my top choice for London, though I have a soft soot for the West End too.

We stayed at the Beaumont in Mayfair, right off Oxford Street but on a little side street that was very quiet. Excellent breakfast. Walkable to several parks, the palace, Piccadilly, etc. and subway is a block away.

This. We picked a hotel close to the British Museum. We could also walk to the theaters we saw shows in. To be fair, we mostly had food delivered, but certainly could have eaten near our hotel if we'd wanted to.

Most walkable as in central to sites was actually in Blackfriars but it’s not that great a neighborhood to stay in. Most walkable as in I enjoyed the neighborhood was South Kensington

Conrad in St. James. Easy walk to Westminster, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and tube station is right next door.

we stayed at covent garden hotel about 6 or 8 years ago and it was a fab location for us. near tube, but also able to walk to a lot of points of interest. think i hit between 14k-21k steps/day - the weather was so beautiful that i simply walked everywhere.

Hilton in south bank - across the street from the Tate, so close to the Globe and the steps from the Borough Market. It's fun for kids with a fox theme, great breakfast.
