What are you looking for? Most on this list are traditional -- stuffy -- as some said. If you want that great. I agree Shangri La at the Shard. Best hotel in London. Great views. Modern but you may not feel like in London except for the view. My favorite hotel.

The Dorchester or Claridges. Both just went through major overhauls and are the best. But when there, always hit the bars at the Connaught and Savoy.

I'm heading to London this fall. If I had no constraints on budget I would probably choose Claridge's.

Don't forget that flights leave at night and then arrive early in the morning in London, but jetlag can be rough on an aging body so you might not be able to stay awake and enjoying the day like you could when you were 16.

We have started to reserve the room for the night before, alerting that we will end up showing up around 8 or 9am.

Yeah that's a good idea if you are taking one of the flights that arrive at 7 AM. I like taking the 11 PM departure (BA has one that late). Lands at 11 AM, by the time you get to the hotel it's probably 1 PM and they will probably let you check -in by that time.

Virgin has a later flight too, at least certain times of the year.
