I don’t know about your family, but my grandmother was a SAHM who made everything from scratch. She’d slave away all day in the kitchen, preparing the feast. There was nothing relaxing about Thanksgiving for her. Meanwhile, all my grandpa had to do was to add some leaves to the table and move some chairs around. My mom and aunts would help in the kitchen. My dad and uncles watched football. Today, most moms work outside the home. They want to enjoy the holiday too.

If you are unwilling or unable to assist me preparing the meal, you get what you get.

If the green bean casserole isn’t present because the dishes I prepared are scratch and fresh, that’s a you problem.

Nope. Especially not when it's been smoked.

Right. Smokehouses overwhelming serve reheated smoked meat from yesterday to fresh from smoker meat, because customers prefer this.

You can’t be serious.

I learned a long time ago that I just don’t have the sense of smell that other people do. I have some relatives who are very sensitive to smells that I can just barely detect. I think the same thing may apply to the taste of leftovers. I don’t mind eating leftovers, but my spouse can’t stand it.

There are a few things I think taste even better as leftovers than when they were just prepared. Chili tastes better the next day. My zucchini bread and pumpkin muffins are more moist the day after baking. Rum balls have more flavor a day or two after they were made.

When I host Thanksgiving, I make things like mashed potatoes, dressing, and vegetables the day of, but I make the cranberry salad and desserts the day before.

It’s not “one upping” to prefer serving food the way you ordinarily serve it - just after it’s cooked.

No judgement for the reheaters. You do you.

The Friday leftovers were most likely prepared Wednesday, or Tuesday.

I throw food in the trash after 24 hours.

Even food safety experts aren’t that stringent. You’re just wasteful. Most things are fine for up to 3 days, if kept refrigerated. Some leftovers can also be frozen and then thawed and reheated later without degradation.

Man turkey is pretty easy to cook. If you are pre cooking it just go buy it already cooked.

The concern for me would be if the meat was handled correctly before cooking, brought to proper temperature when cooking, cooled properly (VERY difficult with an intact bird), and then brought safely to temperature again. Plus, the length of time that the meat is sitting in general.

For me, there’s just too many timelines and places where food safety could easily break down.

My mom is serving reheated turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing today. Nothing fresh. Cranberry sauce made days ahead as well. Even the frozen pumpkin pies, she cooked yesterday so they will be reheated today. Everything reheated. Everything.

I offered to cook, I offered to bring things, I offered to buy things and pick them up this morning. All offers of help refused. Reheated Thanksgiving.

Cooked, refrigerated, and reheated meat takes on a very specific flavor that is just not good.

What? Taking it out "soon after cooking" wouldn't decrease bacteria if it wasn't fully cooked in the first place.
