I agree you do have to stay on top of some things. Burke is not as diverse as it looks. Teachers, admin, students, and board are mostly white. There are some really great teachers and there are some that are problematic. Tuition is also very high for what you get (compared to other schools in the region). No lunch service, limited after-school activities, and limited sports facilities. The small environment is great if that is what your child needs. Parents are very involved, and physical safety is not an issue.

I had two neurodivergent kids at Burke, and I had to shell out a lot of additional money for tutoring and advocate for them to get support. You have to stay on top of things. In my opinion, this school is not great for Black boys.

They're both good schools of similar sizes. Apply to both and see where you land. Chances are you won't get offers at both.

We have a kid with ADHD and the admissions people at Burke actively discouraged us from applying.

If your child is at Field and this accurately describes the activities of their friend group at school, you probably should find a different school to separate your child from this.

If your child is not at Field, how do you know the accuracy of this description? From your child? How many Field students is your kid hanging out with in order for you to have this level of detail? And why are you letting your kid hang out with what are apparently a bunch of drug-addled students?

My kid's Field friends are into vaping, gummies at school, fake id's being passed around, some instances of psychedelics, an informal "wake and bake" club and more. It's a different vibe than public school where less money is being thrown around and a different vibe from other private schools where the kids seem to separate the hard work they have to do from weekend recreation. There are a number of low level buzzed kids floating around quietly that the admins think are just "neurodivergent"..the parents are full pay, the kids do their work at a mediocre level but gets A's and B's... and teachers look the other way to keep peace. Where's your evidence? My child goes to Field; I am a very involved parent; my kid has lots of friends; the only drugs I've heard about are prescribed. There may be some illicit drugs at Field, but it sure isn't pervasive.

What motivates you to make slanderous statements about an extraordinary school?
