some SUNY schools are not much more OOS than UMD is for in-state. There may be other state universities you could afford, especially with merit aid. Like I know someone with a kid at University of Wisconsin Whitewater who's having a good experience and there's aid specifically for out of state students. Of course travel there is more expensive so you'd need to consider that.

If he wants UMD and won’t consider others, do consider community college and transferring. He can apply to MTAP and get guaranteed admission to umd within 2 years with a 3.0 or higher.

What are his stats? There are a number of out of state “rah rah” schools that will come out in the same price range if he is a decent study. WVU is one example, and you can also look in the Midwest. Run the net price calculators, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

OP, what are his stats and what is your financial situation (HHI, assets etc)? You may be eligible for more aid than you realize

Have 2 kids at Towson. Like all of the PP say, it is a nice campus with a decent walkable area. Both kids found it challenging to find their people freshman year (both are introverted) but both found their groove in subsequent years.

We also liked the Salisbury campus and know several kids who are really happy. Neither of my kids were interested because it was too small and the area was too isolated for internships, etc. But DH and I liked it.

They wouldn't even look at Frostburg due to location.

One of my kids really wanted to go OOS. He applied to a few (GMU, Temple, Delaware, JMU, Pitt) and got money from everywhere (but Pitt) but the closeset they came (with merit) to instate tuition was about 10k more/year. This wasn't doable for us either.

Thankfully, Towson has worked out for them and they are happy.

Hope your son finds a place where he can be happy and not disappointed.
