For all you know, the commercial bakery might have mice or roaches. Don't ever work in the restaurant business. You won't like what you find in the kitchen.

It's very likely the home baked cake will be fresher, taste better, and be made in a cleaner environment than a commercial facility.
I still remember a co-worker complaining that her wedding cake was frozen because the bakery makes all the tiers ahead of time and freezes them until it's time to construct and decorate. That's how they bakeries handle the high volume of orders on the weekends.

It would be unusual to announce the source of the food to the guests. Guests are welcome to ask, though.

No. BUT I wouldn't expect to be lied to about it either. In case someone with allergies is fine with Xbrand and researched that, but isn't fine with Ybrand. Passing off Y as X would be a no-no. But that's a very rare possibility.

What? So many wedding cakes are made by "Kakes By Kristy" or "Donna's Wedding Cake Creations" or "Special Day Cakes by Suzanne". Which are just home bakers basically. Only some wedding cakes are made/ provided by the caterer. I'd actually prefer the home baker...

No, I think plenty of people do this. At least people I know for “specialty cakes” or ones they think are better than what you can buy in a store bakery. I have never asked where a cake was from.
