mine is falling apart. i suspect it might have to do with not being put together well. i have another small ikea dresser that i had trouble fitting together and the drawers keep falling out. i actually have a third one i've had for 15 years and i've never had any problems with it.

It is totally dependent on how well you put it together!

We have 2 IKEA dressers and they are holding up well after 6-7 years.

I think the hemnes pieces are very well made. I've had the tall chest for ten years or something and it looks brand new. It stopped getting daily use several years ago when I moved from home, but I know my mom now stores stuff in it and she's never mentioned a problem to me.
We also just bought the long dresser and it seems fine - my husband and sister put it together and I'd say it seems quite sturdy.
I really think it depends on how well you put something together, how often you use it and how rough you are. We have lots of Ikea stuff in our house and I think it looks stylish and has held up very well. Give the dresser a chance and be meticulous about its assembly.

Have had the Hemnes tall 6-drawer dresser for two years. JUNK!! The too-small screws that hold the guides in place keep coming loose, each time working the hole bigger so they no longer fit well. I've actually had to screw in longer wood screws just to hold it together. This fix only lasts a couple months, then the new screws fail. We have three non-working drawers. Problem seems to be the weak wood in the main frame (into which the screws are placed).

We own plenty of Ikea furniture, but this dresser is junk. We expect at least basic functionality.

We have had the long one for about 3 years. It's very sturdy. Take your time to put it together properly and make sure everything is tight and it will last longer. Ours still looks and functions like it is brand new.

yes... and its really not hard to put together. we have the tall and the long one, fit both in a camry with the seats down, and put them together over the course of 2 nights.

I posted above about owning two. it's not the drawer glides that are the problem. It's the cardboard-like drawer bottoms which fall out when the drawer sides come apart. No matter how tightly we put them together the drawer sides eventually loosen, because they're not held in place with regular screws. They're fastened with those screws which feed into the cylandrical plug-like inserts which you turn to tighten. The drawer glides are perfectly fine.

Sorry to write a book about this, but dh and I both have at least one non-operational drawer per person in our dressers.

It is much, much sturdier than the IKEA dressers of, say, 15 years ago. In particular, I am impressed with the upgraded "fine furniture" drawer glides used. They're every bit as smooth and durable as the drawer glides in my and DH's $1800 Drexel Heritage dresser.

We bought the 8-drawer dresser for DD's "big girl" room and it's definitely one of the nicer IKEA pieces that we've purchased (esp compared to those from 10-15 years ago).

We have two Hemnes dressers and if I could go back in time I would buy something better. The drawer bottoms fall out all the time. This is not a problem with the kids' Ikea dressers because their clothes are so light and small. It is a pain in the neck.

We bought them because we couldn't afford anything else, but now it's 5 years later and we still need 2 dressers.

We have a Hemnes dresser and have this problem as well. Dh has tacked the bottoms back in, but they still go back to warped and we have to keep re-doing it. I think it's from the weight of the clothes in the drawer (its mostly the pants drawer with jeans and stuff).

I've only had a few Ikea pieces over the years but durability really hasn't been a concern. I haven't seen any reason to assume the furniture would fall apart unless it is subjected to some unusual stress. For me, it has always lasted several years until I'm ready for a more expensive-looking replacement.

I have had the Hemnes for 5 years without an issues. I've also had two other Ikea pieces for over 18 years. If you put it together well, it stays together. If you put it together like a schlumpadunk, it falls apart.

We've also got a Hemnes (the 6 drawer chest) and have had it for about 8 years. It has been moved from one house to another and then back and forth in the same room. My husband did a great job putting it together and is a strong believer in wood glue - he used it at all joints. It has held up fantastically. The top just started to get loose b/c I keep trying to move it by pushing up on the top. Other than that, it has been a fantastic piece of furniture.

We got the long Hemnes dresser 5 years ago to use in our DD nursery. We liked the height (DH and I both tall) as we had planned to use it as a changing table. It's still going strong! We've had no issues with warping, drawer bottoms falling out, or the glides. I find it to be a very sturdy piece of furniture.
