The parents are something special. They’re not evil though. It would be like if it turned out later if we decided over-rigor were abusive. Everyone from the most rigorous teachers at StA to high achieving parents would come out dumbfounded saying they were just trying to help the kids. Add to that StA, as all schools, had abusers come through their school. If people tried to make that connection, the dumbfoundedness would compound.

Who knows how history will judge us. The hear of that program was negative. I would guess fear and greed, the heart of every over-rigorous program.

Simone Biles in contrast is truly a positive, uplifting force. Whatever the Karolyi’s are, they are not heroes. She is.

I haven't seen "lots of people" having a different perspective. I've seen Mary Lou and Nadia so far, that's it. Wait - Sydney Morris went to some training camps there and hasn't spoken out in either direction.

That was sarcasm. My point was that Karolyi fostered a gymnastics culture where Nassar thrived. Since then the gymnasts are better and happier and have more longevity.

I have to agree with this. He was a very successful coach, and a very interesting and determined man, you can’t deny that. Was he nice to the gymnasts? Doesn’t sound like it, nope. But he overhauled the US gymnastics program and got results. But the whole abuse scandal- I don’t see how you can blame him and Marta and not blame the kids parents.

Yes, but only by traumatizing and abusing young girls, and leaving them vulnerable to be abused in the worst possible way by a man he encouraged to stay working with him.
