I would chalk it up to Covid however the big lesson to share is : UMD was way better than she expected being in state and 35 -45 mins from home. She felt connected to DC, made friends from all over and really loved the business school. There really was no point to pay extra money when UMD was an excellent option. She loved that I could swing by and treat for groceries. We could pick her up for major family events etc.
it felt far away when she wanted it to be, and then felt close when she wanted it to be win win

Why not?
Because UMD > Vtech in every ranking, if that's important to you.
But, if your kid wants a different setting, and you can afford it and don't care about rankings, then go for it.
By the by, UMD beats Vtech in football pretty much every year.
Is UMD football still poorly attended? At least VT fans care.
We were at a UMD football game last night. It was packed.

She wasn’t obsessed with Virginia Tech but was happy to be going. (She was accepted but didnt get to visit UGA and OH State. It was Covid and everything was messed up. )
Transferred to Maryland second semester of freshman year. Was so happy!!!
Blacksburg was too rural. And CP was not high school part 2. And the $$ savings was wonderful and should not be over looked.
