My 8 year old washed her butt every day. Face gets washed. In winter she knows to moisturize her arms and back and sides to limit itching. Sunscreen from May-sept on face. She has seen sun damage on my faces as i didn't wear sunscreen until college (not from the US). She has started with some blemishes on face, mostly from touching it with dirty hands so we are working on that. If she is like me, she will get hormonal acne and I will be vigilant and we will manage it when it comes.

But. I got horrible acne as a kid and in fact still as a 40 year old woman struggle with acne on my back. I would like to. Be preventative if I can be with DD and start getting her into routines around washing her face, putting on moisturizer and sunscreen and eventually acne prevention sooner rather than later. I realize perhaps I’m even too late, but looking for tips for those who have been there done that. What do you recommend and use?

Same with deodorant. Do we start now even though she doesn’t smell? Just to get her in the habit?

I hear you. Believe it not, low dose of zoloft cured my bacne for good. I started wearing open-back dresses in my 40s.

Of course not, I put sunscreen on my kids from early ages at the pool. That’s different than a daily moisturizer for an 8 year old.

It's just Cerave with SPF30. It's very gentle and my kids wash their face every might. I don't see the difference between that and slathering a kid with sunscreen every day for summer camp.

And that is a hard battle for me, in the summer when outside all day. I’m not fighting my 8 yr old every day to wear face lotion. If yours doesn’t care, go for it. But if they don’t want to, this isn’t something I’d force

My DD9 has been wearing deodorant for awhile because when she was active she would stink. For skincare she is one that has gotten sucked into the skin care craze, but she's only allowed gentle cleansers and moisturizers (all she needs). Someone gave her a vitamin C serum and that was removed quickly.

Acne is hormonal and/or genetic. Until she is showing signs of acne, there is nothing she needs to do other than a daily shower.

My 9 year old (boy) needs and wears deodorant. She’s getting to the age, so just be prepared for a year or two from now when she might suddenly need it. My mom started me on deodorant at 10 and wearing a bra at 10, which was before I really “needed” either one but it was good to get in the habit and good to start before it became a problem.

Kids with acne these days almost always go to the derm. I assume OP is around 40? It’s not like when we were kids and some kids just suffered with acne and had bad skin and pock marks. You don’t see that anymore. Kids get prescriptions and don’t really bother with the drug store products unless their skin isn’t too bad and they just have a blemish here or there. She can wash her face nightly in the shower with a gentle face wash and that will be good enough unless you start to notice a problem.

Pls also teach your kid that putting deodorant on dirty sweaty even dry skin does nothing. Needs to put only on cleaned, dried skin

Teachers desperately want kids this age to use deodorant, please be considerate

I would not do a preventative routine. If she starts having issues, you can address those as needed.

I bought my 9 year old deodorant bc she was curious. I’m not sure she’s ever used it. She is not close to puberty now at almost 10.5. Once she smells, I’ll ask her to put it on. For me that was around 6th grade, so maybe next year.
