Trump wants a “beautiful capital.” I think it actually does bother him when gangs of teenagers terrorize people just blocks from the White House. He (rightly) sees it as absurd that we tolerate so much violence in our nation’s capital city, which should reflect the pride of the nation

If his anti-crime feelings come from a place of narcissism (like he just wants people to feel impressed when visiting the government he runs), so be it. The city council takes no pride in our city; they see violent crime as just “part of city living” and something we need to tolerate. Trump actually believes that US cities can be beautiful and something to take pride in

We should look to El Salvador and its lowering of murders by 95% when it locked all the criminals up.

You posted the article describing the crash on Rock Creek Parkway where a drive with $12k in outstanding tickets killed three people. But in June yet another driver with $4k in outstanding tickets killed a pedestrian crossing Foxhall Rd. As far as we know, that driver has faced no consequences whatsoever and is probably still driving around DC. My point was the district, in their decision to allow dangerous drivers to renew their licenses no matter how many speeding tickets they got, balanced public safety with the economics of poor people. It was inequitable to take away drivers licenses for any reason. I wonder how Trump’s control board will look at that policy.

Right. And my point is that, despite all the noise generated by Allen and others about the tragic crash at Rock Creek Park, absolutely nothing has changed.

The Trump win is actually great for DC. Horrible ideologues like Matthew Graves and everyone else at the USAO office will be gone. And finally we can have some reasonable people prosecuting violent men who have been destroying the safety and quality of life for DC residents for years now. Things were much better in the Bush/Obama years.

If punishment becomes certain (as it probably would under Trump’s new U.S. Attorney), these psychopaths will probably hesitate before sticking a gun in someone’s face.

The juvenile crime issue would probably require a partial repeal of home rule. I doubt Trump’s trifecta would entirely do away with home rule, but I could see them either directly wresting juvenile crime away from the city council, or otherwise exerting pressure on the council to do something.

Trump also wants to take over the city police force and deploy the national guard. Not sure if he’s serious about that or if he’s bluffing, but if he does either of those things, I expect criminals to actually feel some deterrence from committing crime

He will be living in DC and hosting world leaders in DC. Image matters to him.

Personally, I am delighted by the prospect of a deep clean. Let’s see what can actually be done.

The city council has proven they can’t tackle crime. Progressive criminal justice is an abject failure. The housing voucher program is a disaster where people take advantage of not paying their rent for years at the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in loses. I am a liberal who lives in dc. A Control Board can’t fix the legislative, judicial and resource issues that are the problem here, like the dysfunctional AUSA, etc. This is not the 90s when the Control Board was needed for fiscal reasons. Republicans do not have enough energy and initiative to actually formulate the needed legislation. Also I don’t think they care. The “dysfunctional DC” thing was just election year grandstanding and they don’t want to put in the work of managing a whole city. Maybe at best they’ll pass some harassing legislation like getting rid of assisted suicide or enshrining the g-d given entitlement to turn right on red. It’s a shame because some thoughtful legislation could help DC but of course this was never about actually helping DC.

I mentioned this in another thread but a huge part of the problem in DC is that since the "defund the police" movement, lawmakers in DC (but especially white law makers in DC including much of the council) are afraid to be tough on crime because it will be called racist by certain activist groups. Nevermind that plenty of black residents of DC are demanding more police presence and enforcement in their neighborhoods -- since a small but very vocal group of activists is eager to call people racists for, say, wanting to address juvenile crime or repeat offenders, many DC politicians just avoid the issue or capitulate.

Trump doesn't care about being called racist and while he is a terrible human being and I can't wait until he's back out of office, I'm happy for him to take the heat on this issue if it gets us some common sense criminal justice in DC. People can yell at him and his administration and then blame them forever but a lot of us will know that this was what was necessary to break the stalemate we're currently in where we can't enforce the law because it's "inequitable."
