Sometimes a pie crust has decorative shapes cut out on top, like fall leaves. Or practice a lattice crust on an apple pie.

Don't frost a pumpkin pie.
Don't force the decorating on things that don't work.
Let the kid stick to decorating small cakes or a side dessert, and not mess with seasonal desserts.

If doing a pumpkin pie, could also easily beautifully pipe whipped cream.

I suggested pie as well, since as you said, you can do a lot, and although we have baked a lot, have never bothered to do a from scratch pie. Maybe I can do a pie, and she can help decorate it.
