Every player on my son's large FCPS public freshman team played AAU last year.

Yes. Both my DD and DS started in 5th grade playing on mediocre AAU teams--the only teams they could make honestly. But it gave them the court sense they needed. They attended some training clinics, but mostly a ton of individual practice every day.

Yes, and lots of work with trainers.

Sometimes kids just want to see if they could make the team.

Sometimes they don't realize how much time
Commitment it is (6 days a week).

Sometimes they don't make the team they wanted.

This happens every year on DD's team too. Why tryout if you are going to quit as soon as offered a spot?

Yes, normal.
He will make freshman team for sure. JV is a numbers game.
Keep in mind if football is still going at their school, a lot of kids who will make JV or Varsity aren't at tryouts.

It depends how many are there --there were 20 players on my DC's varsity court last night that were asked to be there from the larger pool (according to them last night, I was not there). Minimum of 5 players (possibly 8) will go to JV or get cut. The coaches in the past prefer to push down to JV if the kids aren't juniors or seniors. So if your player is a freshman or sophomore, they have less to worry about.

Sorry, just saw your player is a freshman. Same answer: depends how many were there.

The football players are usually the most out of shape even though they practice all the time.
