Pretty big difference between tweens and teens and how they socialize in a backyard, but for the younger set certainly a trampoline, basketball hoop, open space for Spikeball that sort of thing. For older kids I would say fire pit for sure.

My 16 year old son swings and talks on the phone. I don’t think he would be advocating for a swing set or anything but since we have one he still likes to sit out there.

I think the swingset ages 8-13 depends on lot on the kid and their friend group. My older ones did use the swings through their tween years and we were happy to have it during Covid shutdown. My yonngest dropped off the earliest and didn’t use it much after 11. We just took it down.

It’s really hard to predict what your teens will like. Usually the answer is that they will like best whatever is at their friends’ houses.

The playset was useful for ages 4-8. They don’t use it as tweens and teens. The 7/8 year olds might get renewed interest for another year if you add monkey bars.

Trampoline, kids are 14 and 17 and still use it. No injuries. I didn’t get it for them until they were 10 and 14.

Anonymous wrote:Somewhat depends boys or girls (I have both) but not swingsets. Mine use:

-trampoline
-basketball hoop
-skateboards/bikes/scooters
-balls (football, soccer ball)
-wiffle ball stuff
-some cheap orange cones and rubber bases sometimes
-other stuff we have lying around sometimes (jump ropes etc)

As mine have gotten to be older teens they mostly just use the trampoline and basketball hoop. And maybe DS and friends will throw the football around.

Pretty much this. We have a swing set that is pretty tall that they used til maybe 10-11ish. Trampoline, football and basketball mainly. My 2 boys do some game with wiffle ball themselves sometimes.

My tween uses our basketball hoop on a regular basis. She’ll also kick a soccer ball around if she has friends over.
Our yard is not very big.

Are the kids who stopped using swings early ones who really enjoyed them when they were younger or not? My 8 year old adores swings and always has, and I'd be shocked if she stopped using our swing set in the next year or two, although I'm sure it's possible. My 5 year old likes them fine but has never been as much of a swing lover so I'm much less sure when he'll stop.

My 10 year old wouldn't even use a swing set. They use a trampoline, but too many injuries for me to have one.
