Because it’s when they’re observing Diwali. If the (at most, likely) 15% of students who ACTUALLY observe Diwali needed to miss today, they would be excused. For everyone else they observe Diwali tomorrow

I don’t know OP. It’s possible the timing of Diwali changed at some point, because I originally had Nov 1st marked as Diwali on my calendar, and only realized a few weeks ago that it’s actually Oct 31st. I think lunar calendar based holidays sometimes change.

Why isn’t the school system properly recognizing Ash Wednesday this year? Gosh!

If the school calendar marked the day as Ash Wednesday, but it was actually the day after Ash Wednesday, wouldn't you be confused? If they wanted to give a day off for quarter end, then that's fine, just mark it as quarter end, but don't pretend it is Diwali when it's not.

What happened to the separation of church and state in America?! If I wanted that, I would have stayed in my own country, not immigrated here.

Why do all the schools close on basically every religious holiday?!

Yes let's please stop pinning spring break to easter and winter break to Christmas and instead tie them to quarter end. Thank you!!!

The people who celebrate the holidays are about them, PP.

I certainly hope that St Patrick’s Day will be designated a school holiday.

No school the day after Halloween? And it’s a Friday? Let me tell you who is NOT complaining:

Every staff member in an elementary school. This is the greatest move ever.

It is a holiday, noted with a "H" and the explanation below is Diwali, All Saints. Other religious holiday where you actually get off is in October.

No. It was all day. Diwali is supposed to be an FCPS holiday by their policy (I don’t like the religious holidays) but they put it on the wrong day. Definitely a screw up. But they haven’t said a word to explain.

It’s the end of the quarter, which is why Friday is off and not today.
