1. Keep a set of keys to all the cars in the house that no one takes.

2. Keep a set of keys to the other cars in each of the 3 cars. (Perhaps DS’s car does not need a set of keys to you or your wife’s).

3. You each only carry your house key + one car key on a key ring.

Personally I often don’t even carry a house key. Our cars open our garages or we use the code to get in.

We keep all spare keys in a drawer in the house.

I would also leave the extra keys at home. In the unlikely event you need the extra key you are probably somewhere local and you can just go home and get it.

We don’t really have “his” or “her” cars. We often swap day to day based upon who is driving where or if we are in a carpool or not. Hence the instinct to just carry all 3. I will try the shelf thing but I am toying with air tagging them since I suspect they may not find their way home as they play musical driver.

Count me in as another one who only carries the keys to the car I drive regularly.

My DH just carries his own key. He keeps the other car keys on a shelf of his closet. He would never carry 3 separate car keys on him.

Knowing my kid, losing or locking his key in the trunk will be probably the most likely problem.

As a teenager who locked the door with the key in the ignition multiple times, I was always super glad my mom kept the spare on her key ring.

It was a long struggle but I have finally broken my wife of her terrible technique and have taught my children correctly:

The only way to lock the doors is by using the key fob after you have closed all the doors and are walking away. If you lock the keys in the ignition, you will be taking the bus home and waiting on the doorstep.

I completely agree with you. Natural consequences. You lock yourself out you are going to have to wait while I go home and get the extra keys. Give you some time to think about how you're not going to do this again. I'm not carry 3 sets of keys on the off chance you lock yourself out.

That sounds too bulky, especially nowadays the way the keys are all fobs. I carry the key to my car, my wife carries the key to her car, and both kids have the keys to their cars. so we each have our own keychain with a car key, a house key, and any other keys that we might want to have.

With four cars, we have four secondary keys, which are all on their own individual keychains hanging on the key rack along with our extra house keys
