We usually do trips in lieu of gifts, but I surprised my husband with a spa day for his birthday, and also got him all the things to make excellent pour-over coffee at home (Stagg kettle, Chemex, 1zspresso K-Ultra hand grinder, and a bunch of fresh beans from local roasters). Now we’re both obsessed with our morning coffee, and trying out new beans and regions is something fun to do together.

My DH is impossible to buy for—he’s ridiculously picky and actually dislikes receiving gifts. So my go-to is to put together a Shutterfly album of photos from the year, and he’s always happy with that.

If I want it I already own it, anything else is just going to wind up being a burden because it won’t be exactly what I wanted and telling someone exactly what you want kind of takes the fun out of it, especially when you share a bank account.
My favorite gifts are consumable or experiential, a one hour flight in a real airline simulator thing, it’s in a mall in Maryland.
Really cool things to eat or drink also make me incredibly happy, bar seats at Nakazawa, sake that’s been aged in the snow on Mount Fuji, a case of langostines from Norway, an obcenely large slab of A5 Wagyu, some beer, wine or booze of the month club, you get the idea.

Does he have an interest he'd like to pursue a bit, like maybe golf, flying, sailing, skeet, rifle or pistol shooting; foreign language or music lessons? A gift certificate for some lessons in an area of potential interest might be appreciated without representing a commitment to pursue the activity long-term.

For any cook these wireless bluetooth thermometers are super cool.

I dragged (drug?) DH to a make your own purfume class a while back, and he ended up loving it and made his own signature scent. You keep the recipe, and can have the owner make up another/bigger bottle of it, so I think I will do that for him. I'll be following this thread for more ideas!
