According to my DC, at Marshall that is what the math department recommends. They strongly discourage a 10th grader taking IB HL in 10th grade unless the student is truly exceptional. Given how hard HL is, I can see why they recommend SL, for at least one year, to get some foundation.

Thanks for answer and for figuring out what I was asking as didn’t realize until I re-read that I had dropped the HL when asking if took SL 1&2 in 10th and 11th if could take HL 1 in 12th grade.
Thanks also to person that posted about being able to take the test junior year- I get a school would like all to take same time, but if don’t want full diploma, do think school should accommodate to allow test in junior year when taking a la cart — in same way set up for AP tests. Given some colleges now accept AP and IB scores even in place of SAT/ACT, to have a good Math IB score when applying would be a good thing.

It took me some feats of communication to get the IB coordinators to admit it in writing, but they really don’t want to deal with kids doing their own path. It’s all diploma, diploma, diploma for them. I would understand it if these were magnet schools where you join specifically for the DP. But in our FCPS IB schools, IB is often the only college-level class work available, and most kids take IB classes a la carte, so they should be more accommodating. It really upsets me. My kid ended up adding an AP online class so now all his sequences end in 12th grade and will take his tests then but it’s not a great arrangement overall.
I was the person that posted the Marshall sequence. Can I ask what benefit is there to take the exam junior year? Just curious as my DC is also doing things a la carte and not pursuing the diploma.

Alg II HN -> IB AA SL1 -> IB AA HL1 -> IB AA HL2

I have a Senior going for full IB at South Lakes -- the first one on the list is what he has done. MultiVar is a DE class thru George Mason - you have to
The class is still done at South Lakes. It’s the same teacher he’s had for the last two years. The teacher is great. I think he was a literal rocket scientist in England before coming to the US and going into teaching.
Per the paths listed above, this was the option.
He has found it to be incredibly challenging. He’s never not had an A in any class at any grading point and within the first week or two of school, he asked for a tutor and may spend any where from an hour to two a week with the tutor. But. I think he’ll squeeze out an A or maybe A- this first quarter.
+1. I could have written this same message. Our kids must be in the same class.
To answer the question about a review for the test, my understanding is that the teacher does a good job preparing them for the test during the spring semester. It’s helpful that he’s the same teacher who teaches the IB class they’ll be tested on. And yes, he is an excellent teacher.

Wanted to add: Analysis SL 1 and HL 1 are not the same. My DD got an A in SL 1, so she thought HL 1 wouldn't be bad. HL 1 is kicking her butt right now.
