That is crazy. Even in the 90s there were specific times, even in the city.

Maybe where you lived but not here in the DMV.

Born and raised in DC … agree, we had no set times

I give out ToT on Oct. 31 from 7 pm to 9 pm.

Many people aren't even home at 6 pm.

I think 8 is a bit late for the younger ones, so the police station and fire company start at 5:00.
Yes, there are many trunk or treats during afternoon hours, too.

Where is this? Who is enforcing this? I do think the Midwest seems to have more rules about ToTing. I grew up in Northern Va and we've always just gone out at dusk and come home around 8pm. Always on 10/31. No rules.

+1. Why do we need a rule to govern every aspect of our lives. My neighbor is also encouraging me to put my house on the online "TOT Map." Not gonna do it friend. I DGAF if kids come to my house or not. My own long time experience here in MoCo is that trick or treating starts at dusk with the little kids. Most older kids wait until it is dark.

I think some towns post hours for the same reason these threads are always created in October. To set out general guidelines. They aren’t enforced in any way.

Going around a 5 PM is crass.

I have barely gotten home from work and fed my own family. Do not start at 5 PM. It's nuts.

Agreed.

Just don’t answer the door if you’re not ready or you’re done with handing out candy. Easy.

Our town lists the hours - 5pm - 8pm. Use your porch light to tailor it for personal use.

+ 1 please do not come to my house before 6 PM. We will not be ready. After work I have to get my 3 kids fed/dressed for their own ToT. We usually order pizza to eat around 5:30, photos with neighbors at 6, head out between 6:15-30. If you show up at 4:30-5:00 for candy I will likely still be wrapping up work and not happy to see you. I also turn out porch lights at 9 PM.

Do not come on any day other than the 31st.

Who are the crazy people that don’t get the memo on this? Like every family I know ToT between 6-9 on the 31st, but this board surprises me every year that someone has to ask.

Officially really helps set expectations on both ends. In the same way that I’m probably not ready to see your 3yr old at 5pm you’d likely be annoyed if my teen rang your doorbell at 9:30.

Official is different from community-based norms.
