Nobody in great shape got there or stays there by walking a little each day.
Excuse me? I'm 5' 10" and have weighed about 135-137 all my adult life. Walking 3 to 4 mikes every day may not put you in the greatest shape (I used to work out at Crossfit) but it can sure keep the pounds off.

Nicole Ritchie a size 12? Ha! Please.
She was probably a size 4 at her heaviest. She was known for being anorexic looking.

3-4 miles per day is not "walking a little each day". That's a LOT of walking. To put that in perspective for you, that would take me, someone 5'4", at least three hours.

People talk about weight loss as willpower but it isn't like the willpower to finish a race or something. It is willpower 24/7, forever, which is virtually impossible. Very few people can just keep it off.
It really depends on the person. I lost 45 pounds 3 years ago (160 to 115). My life does not revolve around weight maintenance and I don't need much willpower to maintain a 20 BMI. I have a big appetite and eat a lot. I just eat better food than I used to and exercise moderately.
If I had a metabolism that required me to eat 1200 calories a day indefinitely, it would be a different story. But I only got to 160 lbs at 5'4 by stress eating 3000+ calories a day for years on end.
