I had a very successful career, CEO of two companies, and I rarely worked on weekends or weekday nights, even before I became a CEO. I worked long hours during the week and really believed in the separation of work and family. Yes, sometimes weekend work was out of necessity but it was rare. Sadly, technology has made working from home easy and once you start doing it and people know you are doing it they will take advantage of you.

I have found it easier to do some extra work on weeknights than weekends. But neither is ideal, obviously. When I do have to do weekend work, we do nap/quiet time in the house for about 1.5-2 hours where it’s understood that everyone is doing their own thing and my thing is work on my laptop. That also gives us a nice break from each other and others time to recharge.

And I’d say we are moderately busy on weekends with other stuff. If we were super busy then this would be a challenge but when/if that day comes, something will have to give. There are only 24 hours in a day and to me, family and leisure is much more important than work.

I did early mornings (5-7 am), had a couple of organized kids activities (gymnastics, soccer, etc) and could work there, and then did a couple more hours Sunday night after bedtime. It was crazy hectic and exhausting, but having the whole day free for the family and feeling caught up Monday morning was worth it.

Then I got a new job that didn't require those kind of hours - and decided to never go back to 60+ hour work weeks. It's so hard with kids.

I quit a job with “billables” for one that pays less (but still pretty fairly) without them.

It’s theoretically possible I’ll have a crazy period where I need to work on a weekend, but the last time that happened was before Covid.

Two hours Saturday, two on Sunday.
