It was $1,200 out of pocket through intellxxdna plus $700 in referrals (2 visits). We used Pappas Health in Tysons. Spent about $500.00 for three month supplements supplies. Flex spend account reimbursed us and we filed claims with our insurance as well (still waiting).

Our psychiatrist used genomind and we paid $399 within the last year. Our dc developed serotonin syndrome after being on a very low dose of Zoloft so we opted to go this route to find a better anxiety med.

They billed $6k and insurance paid $2k. We don’t own anything beyond the $399.

I would think insurance would cover at least part of it.

Many insurance companies will only cover assessments or interventions that have good data to back up their effectiveness.

I paid ~$350 out of pocket for GeneSight. If I remember correctly they billed my insurer for substantially more but guaranteed I wouldn't be on the hook for more than the $350 if the claim was denied (it was).

As far as the helpfulness of the testing I think its very provider dependent. My Dr. published research on these tests before he left academia for private practice. He spent a good amount of time critiquing my test results and developing a medication game plan. I'm not sure how useful my results would have been in managing my medications without his interpretation as they suggested wide swaths of medication would be useful. I would search out a provider that specializes on psychopharmacology vs psychotherapy in their practice if you want the full benefit.

Around 2005 my med manager had me go through GeneSight, and my BC/BS PPO completely covered it. Last month my new med manager wanted a retest but it would have cost me $330, and I refused. The med manager called GeneSight, explained I was a returning patient, and I ended up paying no new fee for the retest. FedEx even came to pick up the sample.

Still not sure how useful it all is, though.

The testing wasn't helpful at all. I don't know why psychiatrists are pushing it.

OP here. Psychiatrist says that must not be right. It's not the neuropsych because we had that done separately, but it seems it may be a misbilling. We are working on fixing it.

Yeah, my psychiatrist had me do genesight. It cost me about that much about 5 years ago. Maybe a little less. Insurance didn't cover it at all. It ended up being useless for me as the test came back basically saying I metabolize everything the same. So nothing was recommended and nothing was to be avoided.

are you sure you don't have the prices reversed and the eval was $5k while the test was $500? $400-$500 is about what they cost...

OP here. DH and I swear we saw the price in the office when she asked about it and that it wasn't that high, but neither of us remember what it was. It seems like the info must have had that included. We would not have done it if it was that high.
