I always say we have an out-of-town family event. The family event could be a wedding, a funeral, or a swim meet that the parent and child (i.e., family) are attending.

I would not say it's a college visit. APS had this stupid form they make you get signed by your school counselor and someone at the college you're visiting. It's a pain. Heck, last week I took my kid out for a college visit but still called it a family event so I wouldn't need to deal with the form.

And if this is HS, you want to make sure it's an excused absence, otherwise teachers don't have to let them make up a quiz or a test.

Where it can hurt is that the teachers are not obligated to give you a makeup test or work if the absence is unexcused. I’ve never seen that really happen though.

I have. DC had a teacher freshman year who routinely checked whether absences were excused or not when students went to arrange for make up work. If SIS said unexcused, she did not allow the make up. This is why, like a pp, I simply say “appointment” when DC is absent for any reason. I’m technically not lying by definition, and the attendance office is free to ask me for clarification if it finds that insufficient.
