Where it can hurt is that the teachers are not obligated to give you a makeup test or work if the absence is unexcused. I’ve never seen that really happen though.
I have. DC had a teacher freshman year who routinely checked whether absences were excused or not when students went to arrange for make up work. If SIS said unexcused, she did not allow the make up. This is why, like a pp, I simply say “appointment” when DC is absent for any reason. I’m technically not lying by definition, and the attendance office is free to ask me for clarification if it finds that insufficient.
